BJJ For pushing your Surfing Performance to the next level

Surfing might look easy to the amateur eye, but it actually takes a high level of physical fitness to be good at. For those just starting out or those surfers serious about taking their game to the next level it can also be wise to include other forms of exercise.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent addition to your activities for improving your surfing performance. BJJ is widely recognized as the king of martial arts for MMA and competing in the UFC, though it also provides an amazing level of fitness for athletes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides a training system that is perfect for surfers and as well as helps defend yourself against disgruntle locals.

BJJ boasts a big emphasis on building core strength which is one of the most important areas of a surfers ability to perform. As opposed to other so called core training that simply focuses on abs, top ranked Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools like the Gracie Morumbi Academy in Camarillo, CA led by Fabio Leopoldo (Three- time World Champion and passionate surfer) will push your fitness to the next level.  The plyometric exercise elements involved Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are ideal for increase the explosive power you need for catching waves and getting to your feet.  Just being strong or just being fast isn’t enough, you must train your body on every level and discover how to convert strength into force in an instant. BJJ will not only help you train your muscle but tendons and nerves as well so that your whole body is in the best surfing shape you could ask for.  For more information on Gacie Morumbi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing and Kettlebells check out the website here.

Elite Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training in the Oxnard Area

With IBJJF‘s Jiu Jitsu World Championships just taking place last weekend, there are many of the top Jiu Jitsu practitioners from all over the world coming into Southern California to compete.  Many of them stay around a little longer to enjoy training at some of the top academies in the area.

Gracie Morumbi, which is located in the Oxnard and Ventura area often gets these kind of visitors.  This is mainly due to the highly respected found and head instructor Fabio Leopoldo.  As a 3-time world champion, Leopoldo is well known around the world, and has many friends who stop by his three academies located in the Ventura County area.

This past week was no different.  Many members from the Ryan Gracie Team showed up to train in  Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, and Ventura.  Names like Francisco “Pitta” Santana Jr, Talita “Trena” Nogueira, and  Mario Yokoyama of Gracie Oceania.  There’s always great training to be had at Gracie Morumbi Fabio Leopoldo.

Gracie Morumbi Student Trains for Pan Ams Jiu-Jitsu Championships

Check out Gracie Morumbi’s own Jesse Campos in Ventura County Star Newspaper.  Jesse is a former High School and College standout wrestler and is now a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and competitor.  He is currently training for the upcoming International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Pan Ams Jiu-Jitsu Championships, which take place March 29-April 1 at U.C. Irvine in Irvine, California.  Jesse has won and medaled in many grappling tournaments.  Here’s the blurb from VCStar.com:

Campos was a four-year wrestler at Rio Mesa High, placing second in CIF his senior year in 1995. He wrestled with a sprained ankle in Masters, losing a close decision that kept him out of the state tournament.

“It’s a natural progression from wrestling to Mixed Martial Arts or Jijitsu, it’s another form of grappling,” Campos said.

Fabio Leopoldo, a third-degree black belt, trains Campos, a blue belt, at the Gracie Morumbi gym in downtown Ventura.

“He’s a really nice guy,” said Leopoldo. “It’s not like he owns the mat. He’s a big help. He’s an amazing guy and a pleasure to have in our house.”

Erik Klinger, another black-belt instructor, wants to see Campos succeed in coaching.

“He’s really amazing and good with our own people,” Klinger said. “He’s been with us for three years and has really grown. He doesn’t use his strength against others. He’s good with others in the gym.”

Congrats to the Pan Kids Jiu-Jitsu Championships Competitors!

Not only were there many Gracie Morumbi students competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, but also in professional and amateur Mixed Martial Arts fights.  In the professional portion of the event, we saw Jesse Newell make his MMA return in his first fight since his appearance on the UFC’s reality television show “The Ultimate Fighter”.  Newell took on a tough MMA veteran in Aaron Miller.  It was an exciting bout, with many back and forth exchanges.  In the end Newell came up short, but was rewarded the Fight of the Night for his tough fought bout.

In the amateur portion of the event, Gracie Morumbi student Robbie Valance used his takedowns, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and ground striking to win a unanimous decision over Bren O’Neill.  Also, we saw Tim Riscen lose by guillotine choke, after dominating for the first round.  Overall it was a great weekend for Gracie Morumbi.  Congrats again to all the competitors!
