With IBJJF‘s Jiu Jitsu World Championships just taking place last weekend, there are many of the top Jiu Jitsu practitioners from all over the world coming into Southern California to compete. Many of them stay around a little longer to enjoy training at some of the top academies in the area.
Gracie Morumbi, which is located in the Oxnard and Ventura area often gets these kind of visitors. This is mainly due to the highly respected found and head instructor Fabio Leopoldo. As a 3-time world champion, Leopoldo is well known around the world, and has many friends who stop by his three academies located in the Ventura County area.
This past week was no different. Many members from the Ryan Gracie Team showed up to train in Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, and Ventura. Names like Francisco “Pitta” Santana Jr, Talita “Trena” Nogueira, and Mario Yokoyama of Gracie Oceania. There’s always great training to be had at Gracie Morumbi Fabio Leopoldo.

Check out Gracie Morumbi’s own Jesse Campos in Ventura County Star Newspaper. Jesse is a former High School and College standout wrestler and is now a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and competitor. He is currently training for the upcoming International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Pan Ams Jiu-Jitsu Championships, which take place March 29-April 1 at U.C. Irvine in Irvine, California. Jesse has won and medaled in many grappling tournaments. Here’s the blurb from VCStar.com:
Campos was a four-year wrestler at Rio Mesa High, placing second in CIF his senior year in 1995. He wrestled with a sprained ankle in Masters, losing a close decision that kept him out of the state tournament.
“It’s a natural progression from wrestling to Mixed Martial Arts or Jijitsu, it’s another form of grappling,” Campos said.
Fabio Leopoldo, a third-degree black belt, trains Campos, a blue belt, at the Gracie Morumbi gym in downtown Ventura.
“He’s a really nice guy,” said Leopoldo. “It’s not like he owns the mat. He’s a big help. He’s an amazing guy and a pleasure to have in our house.”
Erik Klinger, another black-belt instructor, wants to see Campos succeed in coaching.
“He’s really amazing and good with our own people,” Klinger said. “He’s been with us for three years and has really grown. He doesn’t use his strength against others. He’s good with others in the gym.”
